Mathematics Re-Design
Nationally, hundreds of thousands of students fail gateway postsecondary mathematics courses each year. With college level mathematics courses serving as a challenge for student program completion, the Student Success Center collaborated with Florida high school, college and university faculty and instructors to improve student success in mathematics between 2018 - 2019. Since then, the center has continued to remain engaged in the mathematics pathways policy and implementation process. In 2024, mathematics pathways became effective for students entering fall 2024 with a focus on ensuring students take courses that will enhance their mathematics skills and provide a strong foundation for their program of study and subsequent careers. The center will continue to support institutions in implementing student success reform efforts at scale and monitor the progress of students in gateway mathematics courses.

FSSC launches with Math Re-Design and content alignment serving as a primary focus of the center’s work.
2018-2019
FSSC establishes Florida Mathematics Re-Design Workgroup and establishes three mathematics workgroups focusing on high school to postsecondary alignment, FCS mathematics sequences, and FCS to University alignment. The institute culminates with 11 recommendations for state policy, institutional policy, and evidence-based practices design for scale.
2020-2021
One of the state policy recommendations from the Math Re-Design Workgroup was to “create common mathematics pathways by aligning mathematics courses to programs, meta-majors and careers in Florida.” This is reflected in SB 366 from the 2021 legislative session, which directed the statewide establishment of three mathematics pathways for students decided upon by a representative committee of State University System, Florida College System, and district career centers members.
2022
The statutorily required Statewide Mathematics Steering Committee is tasked with proposing recommendations for general education mathematics courses, statewide learning outcomes, and mathematics pathways with a focus on the skills students need to be successful within their degree program and careers. The pathways recommendations were approved by the Articulation Coordinating Committee on July 21, 2022.
2022-2023
The Department of Education engaged in formal rulemaking process to amend rules impacted by the adoption of the committee’s recommendation, incorporating the math pathways list into the statewide articulation agreement, specifying new courses meeting college-level computation requirements, and replacing MGF X106-X0107 with MGF X130 in the state General Education core.
2023
New mathematics courses, MGF X130 and MGF X1131 are added as statewide courses in the Statewide Course Numbering System (SCNS). The Board of Governors approved amendments to regulation 8.005, General Education Core Course options, to include the mathematics pathways. FSSC launches a RFP for FCS and SUS mathematics faculty and instructional designers to create optional statewide mathematics course shells.
2024- Present
FSSC sponsored optional statewide mathematics course shells made available to mathematics faculty in Florida. Mathematics pathways becomes effective for entering students Fall 2024. FSSC continues monitor student success in new mathematics general education courses and overall success of mathematics pathways.
